Personally all I wear is gold, for several reasons, the primary reason is that I am allergic to anything but gold. Anything else that I have tried (sterling silver, stainless steel, Hypo allergenic alloy's, etc.) gives me a rash after a day or two.
I have a minor nickel allergy, it’s more like sensitivity. It comes and goes. I’m wearing a 904L Rolex now without an issue or discomfort. I find a couple of triggers: 1. When I sweat a lot while wearing the watch (e.g. bike commuting while wearing a watch) 2. When the humidity in the air drops sharply. Unfortunately, after elongated wear, a grey mark shows up on her wrist where the watch is located (which washes off with soap), and after even longer wear her skin turns red, indicating an allergic reaction. You said the rash is itchy, it could be an allergy to the metal as what others have said or it could be some fungi or bad bacteria that stick to your watch over time and may have caused the rash (clean your watch with a warm water and soap), or it could be due to constant friction with your delicate skin and a foreign object ie your watch, or .I thought it was a nickel allergy, but now I don’t. Despite 904L steel’s high nickel content, it doesn’t really leach. I recommend getting a cheap ultrasonic cleaner on Amazon and clean the bracelet (not the watch) with dawn detergent. Sadly, the 904 L alloy Rolex uses comes with a 24 to 26% amount of nickel in it. So yes, it can be an allergic reaction to nickel. And it's actually quite a high amount when compared to 316 L, another alloy used for wrist watches, it only has about 11.6%.
